Mission Statement
The RUSO-VPP SE Office of Violence Prevention mission is to provide confidential assistance to SE students, faculty, staff, and university visitors who have been victimized through threat or actual violence and to support the healing process. Traditional college-aged students are an at-risk population for violence, and staff are dedicated to assisting students remain successful in their academic pursuits. In addition, OVP seeks to enhance safety and promote healthy relationships by sponsoring awareness activities, prevention education, peer education, and collaboration with university officials (MIMOU 2007). Through clinical practice and research, the SE Office of Violence Prevention aims to contribute to the body of knowledge and influence public policy regarding to issues related to victimization.
This project was supported by Grant No. 2007-WA-AX-0004 awarded by the Office on Violence Against Women, U.S. Department of Justice.
Program Goal:
The overall goal is to effectively minimize the incidence of violent relational crime such as sexual assault, intimate partner violence/abuse, and stalking on SE’s campus.
Program Objectives:
- OVP will train SE students, faculty, and staff to recognize signs of violence and how to get assistance.
- OVP will maintain mandatory prevention education programs for all incoming, continuing, and transfer students.
- OVP will coordinate information sharing between response agencies to allow SE to confidentially monitor, respond to, and effectively work to reduce the number of these crimes at SE.
- OVP will partner with the local Campus and Community Education Response Team (CERT) to oversee and provide a survivor response system, educational awareness programs, and develop/monitor effective campus judicial policies relating to these crimes. OVP provides progressive campus community engagment through assessment, research and consultation.
- OVP will provide specialized CLEET trainings for SE campus police to improve their response to these crimes. Professional Development education classes in all areas of violent relational crime are available, through OVP, for SE campus police.
