It is time for the Southeastern community to honor the outstanding faculty. Students, faculty, alumni or anyone involved with Southeastern can nominate a professor who has influenced them throughout their time at the university.
Awards will be given in the areas of teaching, scholarship, service and Outstanding Professor of the Year.
“The Southeastern Outstanding Professor of the Year Award is to be presented in recognition and appreciation of a faculty member who has achieved excellence in the areas of teaching, scholarship and service,” said Riley Coker, Faculty Senate planning committee chair.
A faculty member must be nominated in all three categories to be eligible for the Outstanding Professor of the Year.
According to Coker, all three areas are important to the award because it honors a faculty member who is an all-around leader on the Southeastern campus.
“Excellence in teaching relates to the quality of instructor and student interaction in classes,” said Coker.
Faculty involvements in research, presentations and publications or performance are recognized by the scholarship award, Coker said.
Lastly, the service award “refers to faculty involvement in activities that benefit the university, the community and the profession,” said Coker.
According to Coker, the Outstanding Professor of the Year Award is special and nominees are needed.
“It is special because it is a way to recognize faculty members for their outstanding contribution to the university and community,” said Coker.
Anyone interested in nominating a professor are encouraged to do so through the Southeastern homepage under Announcements.
“We would love for there to be much more participation from the student body,” said Coker. “Currently, the faculty does the majority of the nominating.”
Nominations are now being accepted until 8 a.m. Friday, Feb. 28.
“It is the only way that I am aware of to formally acknowledge an excellent professor on this campus,” said Coker.
