Medical Laboratory Technology

MLT Mission Statement

The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program at Eastern Oklahoma State College is designed to prepare its graduates to be competent, cooperative, and professional laboratory personnel. The program includes an intensive year of study at clinical laboratory affiliates to provide the general and technical training in the procedures and protocols of which laboratory technicians must be proficient. The program is intended to provide certified healthcare professionals for hospitals and clinical laboratories in southeast Oklahoma, northeast Texas and southwest Arkansas. The MLT program maintains the highest standards for dedication, integrity, and ethics in its faculty and clinical affiliates and demands such from its graduates.

Accreditation

Eastern Oklahoma State College is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education. The MLT Program is seeking accreditation by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences, but is not currently accredited. Students must consult with the MLT program director regarding registry application procedures.  These procedures will vary until the EOSC program receives accreditation. These include the American Association of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) and the National Certifying Exam (NCA). The degree is not contingent upon passing the registry. Curriculum

The curriculum includes basic education, required sciences and MLT courses. It is designed to cover theory and laboratory activities of each department of the laboratory and to provide experience in the “real world” by offering clinical experiences appropriate to the job duties of the medical laboratory technician. The clinical rotations will be supervised by certified medical technologists.

Career Opportunities

Medical Laboratory Technicians are proficient in collecting and processing biological specimens for analysis; performing analytical tests on body fluids, cells, and products; relating laboratory findings to common disease processes and; demonstrating professional conduct and interpersonal communication skills with patients, laboratory personnel, other health care professionals, and with the public. They are employed by hospitals and clinics.

Program Description

Two years (six semesters) of full time academic study are required to complete the program; however, students may take reduced loads during the academic year to accommodate working and family obligations. One class is admitted each August. The curriculum is planned to provide correlation between theory and clinical practice. Hospitals and clinics are utilized for laboratory experience.

Admission

Admission is based on GPA (2.5 minimum on a 4.0 scale), ACT Scores (19 Composite Score), and timely receipt of an application packet. Admission acceptance is related to the number of class vacancies. Clinical facility requirements include immunizations, criminal background check, drug screen, CPR, physical qualification form, and a physical exam.

Financial Aid & Scholarships

Long-term, low interest loans are available for students enrolled in medical laboratory technology. Some grants and scholarships are available and information can be obtained by inquiring through the Financial Aid Office.
