About James Wintle
James Wintle is currently Professor Emeritus of Music at Southeastern Oklahoma State University where he directs the Steger Institutes.
Born in 1942 in Pittsburg, Kansas, he was educated entirely in the state of Kansas and holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Kansas, where he studied with John Pozdro. Later teachers included Douglas Moore and Norman Dello Joio.
Wintle has received numerous commissions from major ensembles, including The American Brass Quintet, The Chestnut Brass Quintet, The Chester String Quartet, Voices of Change, Hexagon, The Orion Ensemble, The Chelsea Chamber Ensemble, The Aspen Wind Quintet, The Meadowmount Trio, The Verdehr Trio, The Walden Piano Quartet, Areopagitica Brass Trio, The Maryland Brass Trio, The Whitman Quartet, The Dorian Wind Quintet and pianists Robert Blocker, Aleck Karis, the Long Duo, Joseph Banowetz, Adam Wodnicki, James Giles and the American Piano Quartet. He has received grants and awards from Mid-America Arts Alliance, the Oklahoma Arts Council, the Organized Research Fund of Southeastern Oklahoma State University, the Everette Foundation, the Delius International Competition, the Oklahoma Music Teachers Association and the Burlington Company. His work has been recognized by the State of Oklahoma with the Governor’s Arts Award.
Performance venues for Wintle’s compositions include major recital halls, universities and museums. These include, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Merkin Concert Hall, The Dallas Museum of Art, The Kimball Art Museum, The Whitney Museum, Yale University, The University of Maryland, The University of North Texas, Roosevelt University, UCLA, DePaul University, Northwestern University, The Mannes School, The Phillips Collection in Washington D.C. and NPR radio station WFMT in Chicago. International performances include Europe, South America and the Far East. Recently, several works were performed on a tour of the People’s Republic of China, in Hong Kong City Hall Auditorium, Xinghai Concert Hall, the Xinghai Conservatory in Guangzhou, the Wuhan Conservatory, the Zhenyang Conservatory and Central Conservatory in Beijing. A more recent tour of China included the premier of two Concert Etudes by pianist Adam Wodnicki in Shanghai, Wuhan, Guangzhou and Nanning.
New works for piano will be premiered in the US, Taiwan, Czech Republic, Spain, Portugal and Poland, as well as Wuhan and Zhenyang in the P.R.C. by pianists Joseph Banowetz, Adam Wodnicki, the Long Duo, James Giles and the American Piano Quartet . Two CDs featuring Wintle’s music for trumpet, flute, piano and trumpet ensemble have just been released on Crystal Records with John Holt, trumpet, Paul Fried, flute and Natalia Bolshakova, pianist. CD’s are due for release in 2006 on Albany Records by pianist James Giles and trumpet soloist Chris Gekker.
Dr. Wintle is active as guest composer and adjudicator in many international events including the Gustav Mahler International Piano Competition in Jihlava CZ, the Akai Piano Competition in Osaka, Japan , the Luciano Gante European Piano Competition in Pordenone, Italy and the Chinese Youth Competition 2005 in Beijing, PRC. Other appearances as guest composer in 2003-2005 include the National Conservatory in Seville, Spain, the Chopin Academy in Warsaw, Poland and Festival de Nancy in France.
In 2006-07 Dr. Wintle appeared as guest composer at the Wey Valley International Artist Series in Weymouth, England. He also served on the judges panel for the Citta d’Ovada International Music Competition in Ovada, Italy and as guest composer for the “Chopin to Gorecki” festival held at the Chopin Academy in Warsaw, Poland. Here, Dr. Wintle taught composition and delivered a lecture to participants in the festival from nine countries in Europe and Asia. He also heard two of his works performed in concert, one a world premiere, “Burlesque” for piano trio, performed by the Warsaw Trio.
In 2008-2009 Dr. and Mrs. Wintle visited France to hear a premiere of “Fantasie Brillante”, a work for solo piano performed by Polish-American pianist Adam Wodnicki as a part of the Nancymphonies Festival in Nancy, France. The couple will visit Italy in September where Dr. Wintle will serve on the jury of the Rina Salla Gallo International Piano Competition in Milan. This competition draws contestants from Europe, Asia and the US competing for a first prize of 15000 Euro and 5 concert engagements. The jury is comprised of musicians from Italy, Russia, Poland, Canada and Germany, with Dr. Wintle representing the US.
In 2008 Dr. Wintle was the subject of a doctoral dissertation in the College of Music at The University of North Texas. The study centered on his work “The Key” for trumpet and piano as the subject of both a dissertation document and lecture recital by Dr. Young Mi Seo of South Korea, a student of internationally recognized pianist and author, Joseph Banowetz.
Premieres in 2010 include works performed at The California Music Teachers Convention in Los Angeles, The Nancyphonies Festival in Nancy, France and The International Trumpet Guild Convention in Sydney, Australia.
Other performances include the North Carolina Music Teachers Convention and the Moscow Conservatory, Russian Federation, Xinghai Conservatory, Guangzhou PRC
In 2011 Dr and Mrs Wintle Visited Italy to hear Dr. James Scott, Dean of the College of Music at the University of North Texas perform the premiere of Chamber Concerto for Flute, Harpsichord and string orchestra. Other premiers in 2011 will be heard in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Paris and London.
