Social Security and Medicare Tax for 2013
For 2013, the Social Security tax reverts to its normal rate of 6.2% of wages (employee-paid), 6.2% (employer-paid).
The temporary reduction in the Social Security tax rate expired at the end of 2012. This tax incentive was not renewed as part of the American Taxpayer Relief Act.
Previously, the employee tax rate for social security was 4.2%. The employer tax rate for social security remains unchanged at 6.2%.
The Medicare tax rate is 1.45% each for the employee and employer, unchanged from 2012.
